How to Make a Terrarium

Besides, mini terrarium are a fun and easy way to add some life to any room. They can also be a great way to teach kids about plants and nature. What is a terrarium?
A terrarium is a small, enclosed garden that is usually made out of glass. Terrariums can be either open or closed. Closed terrariums are better for humid loving plants while open terrariums are better for desert-loving plants.
What You Will Need
- A clean, clear container with a lid. A fishbowl, mason jar, or even a recycled soda bottle will work.
- Small rocks or pebbles.
- Charcoal (optional). This helps to keep your terrarium fresh and prevents mold growth.
- Potting soil. You can use regular potting soil or cactus mix.
- Plants! Choose small plants that do not require a lot of sunlight. Some good options include mosses, ferns, and air plants.
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: The first step is to gather your supplies. For this project, you will need a clear glass container, some small rocks or gravel, charcoal (this helps with drainage and keeps the terrarium clean), potting soil, and plants. You can find all of these supplies at your local hardware store or gardening center. Consider 1 large wide-mouthed glass jar as a starting point. It's easier to put the plant in a jar with a large mouth because it allows you to add ornamental components like seashells, figurines, or decorations.
Step 2: Clean your container and add rocks or charcoal to the bottom. If using charcoal, be sure to rinse it off first so that it does not discolor your terrarium.
Step 3: Next, you will want to add a layer of small rocks or gravel to the bottom of your glass container. This will help with drainage. Then, add a layer of activated charcoal on top of the gravel. These terrarium layers will help keep your terrarium clean and free from mold or mildew.
Step 4: Now it's time to add the potting soil. Fill the container about three-quarters full with potting soil. Make sure to leave enough room for your plants.
Step 5: Now it's time to add your plants! Choose plants that are small and will do well in a confined space. Be careful not to damage the roots when you are planting them. Once you have added all of your plants, give them a good watering.
Step 6: Your simple terrarium is now complete! Enjoy your new miniature greenhouse terrarium! Remember to keep an eye on your jar terrarium and water as needed. If you start to see mold or mildew, simply remove the affected plant and charcoal from the terrarium and replace with fresh ones.
